Who is
a cervesario?

Cervesario is a beer expert and taster, who knows all the secrets of the golden beverage and can truly appreciate its unique flavour and aroma. Cervesarios have an extensive knowledge in the field of brewing, sensorics, history and styles of beer. They can pair beer with food and perfectly pour and serve it in the right glassware, while telling tasty stories with beer notes in the background. Their demonstrations are a true feast for the body, mind, and soul.

Everything they do and every step they take is aimed at promoting the culture of beer drinking.

What knowledge does
a cervesario have?

The world of beer is full of flavours, colours, and aromas. What makes the golden beverage even more appealing is the rich culture of serving and tasting. To fully appreciate the qualities of beer, one needs knowledge about the brewing process and ingredients, as well as highly trained senses.

The only person with truly extensive knowledge about beer is cervesario – a beer expert and sommelier.

The variety of beer styles gives rise to tens of thousands of beers with different colours, aromas, foams, serving techniques, and flavours, of course. Sometimes the differences are merely nuances that can only be perceived by people with vast knowledge and heightened senses.

Where does the name
cervesario come from?

The name of the profession derives from the term cervesarius, which is Latin for a brewer. Ancient Romans drank beer notably less frequently than other Europeans for whom the golden beverage was highly valued. The Latin name of one of the yeast strains used in brewing - Saccharomyces cervisiae – comes from the Celts inhabiting the areas north of the Alps. The word found a permanent place in a few European languages (e.g. in Spanish beer is cerveza).

Cervesarius – means “brewer”

How many cervesarios
are there in Poland?

This elite profession requires immense and in-depth knowledge in the field of brewing and beer sensorics. Currently, there are only 24 certified cervesarios in Poland. Most of them can be found at Tyskie Browary Książęce and Lech Browar Wielkopolski, where they run sensoric demonstrations for people visiting the breweries. Cervesarios also present their skills all over Poland.

There are only 24 people with cervesario certificates in Poland.
